Internet without cable or DSL or satellite?

Internet without cable or DSL or satellite?
Okay, this is a strange request.
A person I met claims that she bought a small box that plugs into a desktop and will let her connect to the internet without the house having a landline phone or cable or DSL or satellite service.
Says it was $100 at a chain store and even had a $50 rebate.
Have you heard of such a thing?

You didn't mention cell service. I think that's the only thing left.

Hi, Russ:

I just saw an ad on the TV about a "personal" internet connection device, which one sits next to your computer and ?connects to the internet? or maybe it's just an added security for the wireless signal. Anyway, watch for it and see if that's what you need.

It's also possible it's another type of wireless provider, though more than likely it's a cell phone aircard device.

It's not like it's magically connecting to the internet out of thin air, without an Internet Service Provider somewhere to connect to. It certainly isn't connecting to the internet for free.

Thank you all for your responses. Will check further, but probably cell phone.

RE: Internet without cable or DSL or satellite?
Some areas have WiFi broadcasting (our local electrical cooperative offers that service), that is line of sight from their repeaters. I'm not sure if it has hardware, or not, because I'm not able to receive, so haven't checked in to it.

I think ClearWire is similar to that, as well.

I just saw that NetZero is offering a service, and if I payed closer attention, I'd be able to say for sure, but I think it's relying on 4G. I think it had a dongle of some sort.

"Line of sight" is quite litteral, in that it would require an outdoor antenna.

OK, maybe there is a little wiggle there, but it isn't RF. I live at about 1250' and the hills around the area might be 1650'. The town that the transmission is originating from is about 1400'. I have friends about 2 - 4 miles east AND west of me that can get the signal (the town of origin is west of me), but I'm in a dead zone for that signal. 200' isn't "line of sight", but it's as close a description as I could come up with. It's a WiFi signal, and it's been my understanding that that is a fairly "tight" frequency. I think it does require an antenna mounted outdoors.

Are you trying to say that Wifi, cellular, or satellite aren't RF? Because they all are radio frequency (RF) transmissions.
